Andrew Grant Kurtis
An established artist with a style all his own, Andrew Grant Kurtis seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary with his ingenious use of colour and light.
Andrew has always shown a great love for the arts, and thus pursued formal education in the subject from an early age. He began his studies with a City and Guilds Diploma in industry before going on to study at the Technical College in London, where he obtained a Licentiateship to the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. He then continued his education in Graphic Design and History of Art at the Central School of Art and Design, successfully completing a Bachelor of Design degree with honours. Still reaching higher, Andrew went on to complete his postgraduate studies, and in 1977, attained a Master of Arts.
After his education, Andrew knew he wanted to develop his work in a more classical and traditional way. In the literal sense, he does this by carefully preparing his own pigments and mediums by hand, thus maintaining the science and craftmanship of the oil painting tradition. He then expertly weaves this unique ensemble of pure, graduating colours and rich tones to give his paintings a sense of solitude and tranquillity. No matter his subject, Andrew applies a disciplined depth and thoroughness to each of his paintings.
Over the years, Andrew has produced work within a range of genres, including equestrian, architectural, marine and landscapes. However, it was the landscapes that ultimately captured Andrew’s passion. He is particularly drawn to the mountainous regions of Scotland, Wales and the Lake District, and travels there extensively to gain reference and inspiration for his work.
Andrew’s unique style has brought him great success as an artist. His work has been specially commissioned by publishers for greeting cards and prints, and can be found in leading galleries and private collections around the world.
